"Fantoches" are glove puppets that have existed in Portugal for hundreds of years, originating from Italian theatre traditions. For many years, numerous bonecreiros—the puppeteers who manipulated these street puppets—traveled from town to town performing stories.
Taking this history as a starting point, we have created an activity for families or school groups. It involves crafting a puppet with the traditional "fantoche" characteristics, but enhanced with rod-manipulation techniques.
The basic principles of manipulation are present in this small figure: its gait, its gaze, and the construction of a personality that allows the puppeteer the expressiveness needed for theatrical play.
This training was designed to be launched during the Dias de Festa (Festival Days) as a new educational offering from Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora, and it will become a permanent part of their Puppetry School program.

Puppets, while often associated with childhood, are deeply woven into our collective imagination, history, and tradition. This art form offers an inexhaustible wealth of theatrical experiences, constantly renewing itself through innovative creation and manipulation on the modern stage.
It is essential for educators to equip themselves with the specialized knowledge needed to facilitate these experiences. By exploring diverse materials and construction techniques, teachers can provide students with the tools to develop original creative work, transforming the classroom into a laboratory for theatrical discovery and artistic expression.
