Royal Customs House – Shipbuilding Museum
recreation of a historical moment through figurestodos os públicosThe permanent exhibition open to the public has three themes, which reflect the museum's function: Portuguese navigation, particularly that which originates and ends in Vila do Conde; the history of the Royal Customs House and its operation, officials, and customs-cleared products; and the history of shipbuilding, types of boats built in Vila do Conde, and their construction processes.
The Alfândega Régia - Shipbuilding Museum building is located on Cais da Alfândega Street, in the heart of the Vila do Conde riverside area, where the Vila do Conde shipyards once operated.
In the 15th century, the heyday of maritime trade led to growing activity in the kingdom's ports, and the port of Vila do Conde was no exception. Thus, in this context, King João II, by letter dated February 27, 1487, created the Royal Customs House of Vila do Conde.
Throughout the 18th century, the building underwent successive expansions in order to meet the needs dictated by the intense commercial traffic that was then being felt.
