rocking show . on stage

This category of projects brings together a set of artistic proposals aimed at young audiences, as well as families, school groups, or private audiences.
We consider artistic creation designed to educate audiences to be fundamental, but above all we believe that every individual should have access to cultural enjoyment regardless of their age. We also believe that these projects allow us to explore personal experiences and develop languages of artistic communication, creating very specific norms, such as dialogue with babies…

root creation . on stage

Original projects that aim to promote a broad artistic language and creative freedom for creators to challenge themselves artistically and dramatically, as well as in the exploration of interpretation, puppetry, and object theater. These creations are a fundamental reflection of their creators' concerns.
We decided on this designation due to the genesis of the name that gives us rise — Mandrake (Mandrágora), a plant associated with a certain mysticism. That root is also the origin point of our structure, which, in a very many-skilled way, branches out in diverse paths. We're a creative team that considers and analyzes each other's personal concerns and also challenges itself that lead to discoveries which affirm the art of theater and, more specifically, of puppetry.
More than two decades later, this form and figure emerged in a long process of discovery. We went through collective creations, invited directors, and gave voice to the artists who make up the creative core of the structure. Therefore, we believe we've achieved a clearer way of indicating the potential paths and trajectories of a collective composed by individual choices.

travelling theater . on stage

The outdoors, the street, and the open air are as much a way of being as they are a form of artistic dialogue. This is the privileged stage for community life. In a country like Portugal, the occupation of outdoor spaces—our squares, gardens, and beaches—is fundamental. These are places where the sun shines and where families, children, and spectators gather, turning artistic creation into a point of contact, with the sky and the landscape as their backdrop.
Since time immemorial, whether through small or large-scale works, historical contexts, or vibrant festivals, our territory has offered magnificent natural and urban spaces. We populate these settings with countless proposals born from our particular artistic way of being. Whether through new creations, itinerant performances, or the presentation of our beloved Teatro Dom Roberto, we believe that the street and the open air are inseparable from our journey.
The street is not simple; it contends with atmospheric unpredictability, the inconstancy of space, and shifting social dynamics. Yet, it is immediately embraced by the local population—the people who transform a fleeting performance into a lasting memory. We deeply value the outdoors and feel that it remains the ideal place to make art happen.

educational service . on stage

School is where a significant part of learning takes place. For many years, we have been allies in education and culture, through the training of individuals and raising their artistic awareness.
We have created a section dedicated to schools, at different school levels, to simplify the communication process between the Company and school management.
There are many other creations that fit these possibilities, but we have selected proposals that, in our view, find in the school environment an ideal place to build the identity of each of these young individuals. Individuals who are in training and who we believe are the future of this structured and free society. One spectator at a time, one student at a time, and we will have fulfilled our cultural and educational mission.

The Company develops projects in which, through the reading or reformulation of artistic programs with multiple points of origin, it proposes the reinterpretation of a theme.

Whether in the interpretation of excerpts from creations, in the reading of texts, or in scenic and plastic work, this way of connecting words, images, and the viewer presupposes a relationship of informal dialogue.

community project . on stage

The impact of artistic work on the community allows us to consider it an excellent tool for empowering vulnerable individuals. Several projects implemented by different artistic organizations lead us to conclude that there are integrative behavioral improvements in the community.
Government support for the development of various programs in this area is an important facilitating factor for various associations and institutions that actively address this issue, creating social development projects through art.
“The concept of Education through Art has been the subject of reflection by some educators, philosophers, and even historians, fitting into the emergence of ‘new values and concepts’ in contexts of social, economic, and ideological transformation. Thus, several writings have emerged, nationally and internationally, as a product of concern and reflection.” (Meira, 2015).
In line with this thinking, the work presented demonstrates the importance of artistic practice in communities that welcome individuals with different vulnerabilities, from different age groups.
Although Morin has a very clear view of our thought process and its “hidden principles,” his view of things and the world is distorted by beliefs and, above all, by the goal of lifting the veil on a widespread belief that individuals in situations of vulnerability only enjoy artistic contact as social positivism, without this being properly analyzed. The creator of art and their creative potential are fundamental in these socially segregated communities. (Morin, 2005)

theater in institutions . on stage

Since 2003, Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora has acted as a strategic partner in cultural mediation, implementing educational services that utilize puppetry as a vital tool for dialogue.
Our institutional programs are widely disseminated across the country, providing venues with pedagogical tools designed to bridge the gap between institutions and their visitors. These are sensory-driven performances that invite the audience to engage through participatory contemplation.
By promoting Educational Service programs through the art of puppetry, we establish a unique rapport with the public. We aim to foster a global mindset—encouraging audiences to reflect, ponder, and, above all, cultivate new cultural habits. Integrated into heritage promotion and the decoding of artistic languages for young audiences, this project champions the puppet as a powerful vehicle for communication and learning within educational settings.

Puppets, while often associated with childhood, are deeply woven into our collective imagination, history, and tradition. This art form offers an inexhaustible wealth of theatrical experiences, constantly renewing itself through innovative creation and manipulation on the modern stage.
It is essential for educators to equip themselves with the specialized knowledge needed to facilitate these experiences. By exploring diverse materials and construction techniques, teachers can provide students with the tools to develop original creative work, transforming the classroom into a laboratory for theatrical discovery and artistic expression.

big workshop . on stage

The members of the Company have a strong background in dramatic and plastic expression. This is reflected in the diversity of workshops that it offers to the public.
It is through these activities that the Company introduces puppet theater to the community, thus attracting wider audiences and motivating them to learn about this fascinating art.
More specific training for professionals in the field fills a gap at the national level, highlighting us as an organization that not only creates, but also teaches others to create, without reservation. All types of puppets used in these courses have been previously explored in the Company's shows, resulting from in-depth research into the techniques and materials used to make them.

We realized that it was necessary to showcase this collection, both for the Company, in terms of promotion and publicity, and for the public, who have always been incredibly supportive.
Whether for recreational, educational, or artistic reasons, exhibiting our work is an integral part of our intention to showcase the many facets of puppet theater that accompany the presentation of our creations in the context of a show.

art installation . on stage

The environment that surrounds us is inspiring, a source of dialogue between public space and art. Thus, artistic installations integrate urban and rural spaces, whether through events and initiatives, or informally, presenting themselves to everyone. Art can and should be present outside galleries and exhibition spaces, there too, but not only there. Whether through guest artists or intergenerational community programs, the installation of art in public spaces is a statement. Art is important in our daily lives, whether in harmony or as a confrontation of ideas and concepts that encourage us to reflect. And suddenly, while walking, the individual finds themselves in front of the work, the installation, breaking the routine through art. And so thoughts, reflections, or the simple aesthetic contemplation of something that arises unexpectedly are instigated, placing the individual's mind in a place of artistic reality.

art creation . on stage

Since the birth of Teatro e Marionetas de Mandrágora, its creative team has engaged in multidisciplinary artistic dialogues, collaborations, and various partnerships. These cover a wide range of synergies and, as such, the creative artistic team, which is the central axis of all the company's artistic projects, meets with other entities and structures that feel the need to seek out these technically specialized professionals in order to find answers to their creative, educational, or heritage needs.

Thus, collaborations between projects and visual artists are often called upon to take place, creating challenging and innovative artistic dialogues that certainly bring new and distinctive sharing of learning, which not only meet technical needs, but rather enhance collaborations and joint creative developments.

These collaborations, many of which have been repeated over the years, create important partnerships between entities that allow for not only dramaturgical, but also technical and artistic observation. The dialogue between performing artists and other bridges of artistic empowerment launches a movement and drives the transmission of specialized knowledge, implementing artistically consolidated projects on stage or in spaces, where joint learning is above all a position in the way of being of the creatives in the structure.

editorial

Publishing serves as a record of our evolution and the changes we have undergone over time. Publishing preserves the history of our company, as well as the development of the art of puppet theater.
Overall, publishing within a company is important for preserving the company's history, documenting its techniques and styles, sharing knowledge and skills, and promoting the company and its work.
